Defend Camden NHS

Backdated from previous BA website

Thanks to everyone who came to the Camden Council’s Health Scrutiny meeting last week. The Committee did agree: a) To ask NHS Camden to amend the consultation document so that real consultation could take place on alternatives. b) To ask NHS Camden to stop tendering for the GP Help with some real consultation! How you can help: 1) Come to our next meeting Tuesday 30 June 6.30pm Committee Room 1 Camden Town Hall Judd St, WC1(See minutes of the last meeting attached.) Candy Udwin Chair (07946 480 261)

Camden Keep Our NHS Public campaign group
Minutes of meeting, Community Centre, Ossulston St, NW1, 6.30 p.m., 16 June 2009

1. Apologies for absence: Pat, Noreen, Sheila, Sabby, June Swan
2. Report: 10 June meeting
The meeting at the Dick Collins Hall on 10 June had been very well attended by about 120 mainly local residents. Frank Dobson had apologised for not getting there because of grid-locked traffic on a tube strike day. He would be happy to meet some of the group to discuss our campaign. The Camden New Journal had reported the meeting on 11 June, when it also published Robert McGibbon’s Forum piece and a letter from Sheila Patton. The meeting was unanimous in opposing privatisation and requesting improvements in the present family practices.

3. Campaign actions
The revised NHS Camden draft of the consultation document on Primary and Urgent Care Strategy (PUCS) will be the topic of a deputation from our group at the Health Scrutiny Committee meeting on 18 June. Consultation on this document is scheduled to start on 1 July and end on 7 October, with a final report for the public going out in the week beginning 9 November. The out-of-hours service at present run by Camidoc is being considered at the same time. The PUCS document was therefore discussed in some detail and the following points were made, some of which should be included in the deputation statement:

Procurement has already started for the GP-Led Health Centre in Hampstead Road, though GPs in the Regent’s Park area were not consulted about this. This model is unproven and no costings seem to exist for it.

Competitive tendering is not mentioned in the new document.

Why should a service like Camidoc, which is known to work well, be destroyed?

The list of those that NHS Camden proposes to “engage and consult with” doesn’t include Trade Unions.

It was agreed that another public meeting should be held in Somers Town in late June or in July at which the consultation document could be discussed. Question 7 of the document asks whether the respondent supports the expansion of GP services and the development of services at the new GP-Led Health Centre and we should perhaps concentrate on this.

It was also agreed that another public meeting for all areas of Camden should be held in September before the consultation ends.

Other events members should attend include local summer festivals [list sent to Candy] and Area Forums.

Suggestions from members about the consultation document will be welcomed by Candy.

4. Press and publicity
Sarah is back in London and could perhaps arrange publicity in papers other than the CNJ.

5. Finance
Barbara hasn’t been able to get hold of Clem to get his signature on cheques. Otherwise there’s no change in our financial situation.

6. Any other business
There seems to be a proposal to redevelop the Highgate Day Centre but the situation isn’t clear.

The Today programme on Radio 4 is asking for suggestions on how savings might be made in the NHS (send yours to http://www.bbc.co.uk/today). During the programme this morning (16 June) one interviewee had blamed rising costs on managerial shortcomings (poor work by many PCTs) and on the World Class Commissioning system.
