Subject: Camden Plan
In my new position as Leader of the Council, I am pleased to share with you the councilâs new Camden Plan.
The Plan is available at camden.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/council-and-democracy/camden-plan.
Approved by the Council on 19 April, the Camden Plan takes a different approach to our past community strategies and corporate plans. As elected representatives of the people of Camden, our role is to articulate ambitions for the borough and lead the way in achieving them. Having spent much of the past two years making difficult decisions to put the Council on a secure financial footing in response to unprecedented cuts in funding, we are now in a position to do so. We believe the Camden Plan, which places reducing inequality and preserving the social mix at its heart, provides a distinctive vision for our unique borough at a crucial time for local government and public services.
The strategic objectives and outcomes in the Plan are unashamedly ambitious. We are quite open about the fact that we donât yet have all the answers. However we do know that we canât deliver the outcomes in the Plan alone and that we will need to change radically as an organisation. We summarise this in four principles in our framework for action at the end of the plan: focusing on the needs of our residents and businesses, involving communities more in decision-making and delivering services, integration within the council and active partnerships with others.
There are a number of questions posed throughout the Plan; they tackle big issues for the future of Camden, for public services and while we are confident in our ambition, we want to work with you and other partners in the borough to come up with the answers on how we best tackle them. We would really value your perspective on these questions. You can respond by e-mail, post or at www.wearecamden.org/camdenplan.
We see the publication of the Plan as the start of a new relationship with the people we work for and the organisations we work with. Please read it, reflect on it and let us know what you think.
